On the cover of the box there is a number of terms and symbols which are important to understand when making an order. The symbols you will find on most lens packaging are:

Sf, Sph, PWR or D which indicates the strength of the lenses. Should you be short-sighted, the symbol will display a minus sign before the number, whereas a plus sign will be displayed if you are long-sighted.
BC means base curve and indicates how rounded the lens is. It usually lies somewhere between 8.0 and 9.0 degrees on soft lenses. Most lenses are only available in one BC.
Dia indicates the diameter of the lens size across the whole width. This measurement usually lies between 13.8 and 14.5 degrees on soft lenses. Most lenses are only available in one DIA
Lenses correcting astigmatism additionally bear two further symbols:
Cyl or Cylinder indicate the degree of correction which the lenses provide against astigmatism.
Ax or Axis displays the degree to which the lens corrects astigmatism on a scale from 0 degrees to 180.
Lenses correcting presbiopia additionally bear one further symbol:
ADD indicates the additional eye power (depending on the lens it can be low, medium, high or a number e.g. 1.00/1.50/2.00/2.50)
